A Little Bit of History…..
In 1908 the then St Pauls Operatic Society performed The Waterman and HMS Pinafore at St Pauls schoolroom to rapturous reviews (so we believe!). 1910 saw performances of Yeoman of the Guard and The Mikado – Gilbert & Sullivan operettas that were performed over subsequent years due to their popularity.
With the outbreak of war in 1914, HMS Pinafore was the last performance until 1921, when Trial by Jury and The Ancient Mariner were staged. The 1930’s saw the St Pauls expanding its repertoire, performing Ruddigore (1930) and Princess Ida (1937) for the first time. Sadly, the 1938 performances of HMS Pinafore and Trial by Jury were to be the last until 1948.
Throughout the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s, Gilbert and Sullivan’s operettas still proved to be the most popular and most requested shows to perform. In 1980 the then society broke with the Gilbert & Sullivan tradition and performed The Merry Widow, followed in 1981 by The Land of Smiles, both by Franz Lehar. Continuing to stage at least one performance per year, which now include modern musicals such as the irrepressible Victoria Woods Acorn Antiques and The Addams Family.
Over the years St Pauls Musical Theatre Company have grown in stature and reputation as an musical theatre company producing great shows and concerts with highly talented singers and performers.
The curtains couldn’t go up on our productions if it wasn’t for the dedication, hard work and sheer enthusiasm of our all members. Many of whom contribute on a daily basis to the Company, ensuring our performances are a memorable occasion for all!
Management and General Committee
Chairman – Alan Turner - Alan was re-elected as Chairman of the Company. Alan has been a member of St Pauls for over 30 years and served on the Committee for most of that time.
Vice-Chairman – Jean Sanchez - In her role as Vice-Chairman Jean provides support and guidance to the Chairman.
Honorary Secretary - Sue Rannard - Sue is primarily responsible for all correspondence and communication to members and production personnel and for providing support to the Chairman and General Committee.
Honorary Treasurer – Roy Milne - Roy is no stranger to St Pauls having been Chairman some years ago as Treasurer brings a wealth of experience to the role.
Our General Management Committee is responsible for all matters connected with the Company from its rules and constitution down to the tiniest detail of their productions. Whilst the Social Committee under the watchful eye of Hilary Turner and Mary Milne is responsible for organising funding raising events during the year for our members and friends.
Annual Membership Fees
Full Paying Member £50.00
Non Playing Member £15.00
Junior (under 18) £10.00
A rehearsal levy of £2 is payable for each rehearsal attended, this offsets the hire of the rehearsal hall and the Musical Director and Accompanist honoraria.
Once we are able to perform again rehearsals will take place each Tuesday, 7.45pm at Grosvenor Annexe, Grosvenor Street. Wallasey Ch44 1AQ. Feel free to come along if you are interested in joining the company.
St Pauls are always looking for new members.
